FIELD GUIDE / 01 · REVIEWED NOVEMBER 1, 2026

Read the coverage, not the label.

Treat the coverage list as your map of the policy.

Different coverages answer different questions

Liability
Helps cover injuries or property damage you cause to others, subject to the policy.
Collision
Addresses damage to your vehicle from a collision with another vehicle or object.
Comprehensive
Addresses specified non-collision losses, such as theft, fire or hail. It does not mean everything is covered.
Uninsured / underinsured motorist
Addresses certain losses involving a driver without insurance or sufficient insurance. Availability and terms vary.

Read beyond the summary

The declarations page identifies vehicles, coverage limits and the policy term. Read the exclusions and endorsements too: they can change how protection applies. Ask the insurer to explain any unfamiliar restriction in writing.

State requirements and lender requirements may differ. Confirm both before changing coverage.
